History of the Studer list

The Studer list was a subscriber-only internet forum founded by Adolph Friederich Thal that hosted discussion on the history, technology, use, maintenance and repair of the important Studer professional analog audio master tape recorder models A80, A800, A820 and A827 manufactured by the firm Studer International AG, in Regensdorf, Switzerland.

Production of Studer tape recorders was long ago discontinued. The Studer trade name is today owned by Harman International Industries.

An impressive quantity of posts submitted to the Studer list by knowledgeable contributors from around the globe amassed an important body of knowledge and information on subjects of interest to persons working with analog tape recording technology.

To preserve this knowledge resource, list founder A. F. (Fred) Thal is working on the preparation of an edited and indexed compilation of the Studer list posting archives, with the intent to make this edited compilation document freely available on-line.

Today, Fred operates Adolph Thal Audio Engineering (ATAE) and also Audio Transfer Laboratory (ATL), in northern California. He can be reached at
